Philip Glass Remixed: REWORK_
2012-14
Composer Philip Glass experiments with the audio-visual interactive remix of his music
About
REWORK_: Philip Glass Remixed is an interactive musical artwork which premiered in 2012. I was both the producer and a contributing artist to the interactive visual experience, in collaboration with my husband, Scott Snibbe. The project features 11 experimental abstract animations, lasting a bit over an hour. Each one is unique and interactive in its own way, allowing the audience to intimately explore the music in a novel way.
The audio consists of remixes of the music influential composer Philip Glass. The remix artists include Beck, Ty Braxton, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Dan Deacon, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing, and others. The project was launched in collaboration with Philip Glass’s studio in honor of his 75th birthday in 2012, and then rereleased for his 85th birthday in 2022.
The artwork also features an interactive “Glass Machine” that lets the audience create their own original music inspired by Philip Glass’ early music. By simply using finger gestures to slide two turntable-like discs, polyrhythmic counterpoints are generated between the two melodies.
The interactive art project was the recipient numerous accolades, press and exhibited internationally including participating in exhibits of the Museum of Modern Art (NY), The Barbican Centre (London), and the Contemporary Jewish Museum (SF).
